The answer is probably YES… as the government in Spain is working on a plan to ban the sale of commercial vehicles that emit carbon dioxide by 2040. So that means an end to the sale of all petrol and diesel cars, but also hybrids, which burn gasoline or diesel. The measure follows announcements in other EU countries, such as the United Kingdom and France, who have set targets of 2040, but also Denmark, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands, which have set a date of 2030.

WHY ARE ELECTRIC CARS THE FUTURE?

Troubling climate change impacts and global warming effects have been hot topics in the news lately, and scientists have been telling us that if we don’t change our ways we are going to face a global climate catastrophe. So to meet the goals set by the Paris Agreement, Spain is trying to cut down on its carbon emissions.

Currently, just over over 25% of all greenhouse gases emitted in Spain are from the transportation sector. But with the ban on carbon emitting vehicles, Spain hopes to reduce greenhouse emissions by a third in a decade.

TALKING POINT

  1. Do you agree with these proposed measures? Why? Why not?
  2. Would you like to own an electric car? Do you know anyone who drives an electric car now?
  3. Will electric cars of the future be better than current petrol and diesel cars?
  4. What other measures can we take to reduce carbon emissions and protect our environment?

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SAY THE PARTS OF A CAR?
